When should i change my shoes?

Question: I run about 30-37 miles a week and have been replacing my shoes about once a month. This is getting expensive! i was wondering how often everyone else actually gets new running shoes, and how the determine when to get em?

Answer: The rule of thumb for an active runner is to change your shoes every 500 miles or so. Like oil changes, this is only a rough estimate, and only your feet know for sure. If the cushions start to wear too much, and the shoes start consistently cause your feet pain, then you have already gone too much. If you run 30-37 miles a week for a month, that works out to be about 135-170 miles. Your shoes should definitely not wear out during that time. Even if you are a very heavy-set guy and you pound away at your shoes, I find it hard to believe that any halfway decent shoes would wear out in less than 200 miles. I recommend that you check to make sure that you are not prematurely wearing out your shoes by dragging your feet, for example. Otherwise, you're safe getting new shoes every 2 1/2 to 3 months or so.
